When preparing for projects, presentations or any type of event, we often do so with what I call the perfect world thinking theory. Everyone will show up on time, all outside variables will cease to exist in the timeframe of your event, and everything will go perfectly according to plan. In reality, this is rarely the case. People show up late, unexpected circumstances arise, and the plan is always disrupted by something.
I believe there is a way for everyone to think through this inevitable disruption and expand your preparational thinking. Ask yourself this question:
“What might go wrong and how will I approach solving the problem.”
I call this a “plan disruption list.” This flips your thinking. It immediately forces you to identify gaps in your plan and create contingencies in your mind which leads to greater confidence. Try this! So the next time technology fails, people show up late, or you get a flat tire on the way to a wedding, it might be unexpected for some, but not for you.
