If you have ever tried something new in your life, then you probably know the inevitable feeling that follows the first time you do it. It is not uncommon to have feelings of anxiety, nervousness and worry. You feel that way because something new also means something unknown. Most people have a “fight or flight” reaction and end up retreating to the comfort of their habits.
When people try something new, they tend to dangle in a type of crossroads – the decision to do that new thing or not.
My friend Morgan, has a phrase she uses so often that it has become ingrained in me. She says, “just try it.” Three simple words, yet three words that pack a punch. When I am debating whether to try something new, I remember this sound bite before taking that leap. “Just try it.”
I have always had a fascination with words. I love the way certain words can be used together to create a story that people can remember or relate to more specifically, I find a lot of joy in rhyming words. Sometimes, the most poignant stories are told in the format of poetry.
I have been afraid to write poetry for a long time because I always thought of it as being difficult, but I thought of Morgan and her advice..Just try it and so here I go.
A Leader That Thinks Beyond Oneself
The last game, workday, paper, or presentation does not define you.
Maybe you’re experiencing a feeling of blame, a feeling of going insane, a feeling of shame.
But what about impact?
Think beyond!
But after all it is your choice. A choice you make to find your voice.
You must deposit before you withdraw, serve before you receive,
But think for yourself, decide what you believe.
It’s not easy, it’s not supposed to be,
Otherwise you would never become the leader you were meant to be,
And that I can guarantee.
You’ve held pain in your possession
Which showed through your facial expression, bordering on depression, but here’s the question.
How could you be a leader without a “you” obsession?
Someone is in pain that you might not see
But believe it is there and don’t just let it be
How might you step up and be the person who offers support, leadership, or a helping hand?
I did it. I wrote some poetry. Now, what about you? Someone or something in your life is just begging you to “just try it”. Go ahead, just try it.
